'Coach Prime' is a six-episode docuseries that transports fans inside the locker room and onto the field of Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders’ University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) football program for the 2023 season. BGSTR designed the second season of the series, including the title sequence, with graphics created to give an up-close and personal look at Sanders' debut season as head coach of the Buffaloes.
After the success of the first season, the production team really wanted to up the ante for the series and create a brand and graphic architecture with a lot of impact. We started with typography and animation for a toolkit and to set the direction for the title sequence, which was our big ask for this engagement, and built out the series design from the ground up.
We leaned into Coach Prime himself, the state of Colorado and the players as our characters when designing the title sequence. The overall concept was to take the character of Coach Prime and the main story this year— his transfer to Colorado and the question of will he be able to bring the success he’d seen at Jackson State to a Power 5 conference.
After establishing the direction, we built out the textures of the sequence— the mountains of Colorado, colors of the Buffs football team, and the Coach Prime logo. The overall treatment of the title sequence was super dynamic, a lot of freeze frames, rips and tears infused into the Coach Prime logo, and came together really beautifully. We worked these elements into the system we had established to create a compelling storyline inviting viewers into the drama.
The supporting storyline of the second season is the shake-up to the transfer system within college athletics, creating questions around the number of players Coach Prime was bringing to the team as well as those who would leave. To reflect that element, we incorporated elegantly shot portraits of the student athletes and included a montage of those shots within the sequence.
We worked at a tight clip to get this project turned around promptly for our clients— 90% of the work on the title sequence was completed within two weeks. After delivering the title sequence, we designed some interior graphics for the series. We created a sequence known as the ‘Prime Effect’— breaking down what is the effect of Deion Sanders coming to a place like Colorado. We also did a tweet montage reflecting the media buzz that surrounded the announcement of the position change.
Congratulations to our partners on the splash the second season of the show has made. We were thrilled at the way our design incorporated into the series and how hard our team was able to push within the tight turnaround times required of the project.
