‘Evolution of the Black Quarterback’ is a three-part Prime Video docuseries that follows retired NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick as he travels across America to explore the history and impact of Black quarterbacks on and off the field. The BGSTR-designed original series pays homage to the rich history, celebrates the progress, and sets its sights on the future of the QB position.
The first order of business on the series was nailing a design for the title sequence. Our design originated by exploring a few directions emphasizing different elements of the series.
We stripped down the imagery we’d been provided to develop an emotional direction featuring the raw expressions pulled from the series’ highlights.
A second direction layered imagery with statues we created in 3D to feature the story of the players who fought for their right to be on the field or influenced the game of football.
A third direction blended the two until we found the perfect look and feel for a backdrop of a series featuring some of the most influential Black QBs—past, present, and future—to ever play the game.
Once we nailed the look of the title sequence, we moved on to the series design and made an effort to develop a dynamic look and feel that would keep pace with the lively personalities featured across the three episodes. Step one was developing a photo toolkit to give the photography featured in the series a consistent look regardless of what element was being featured.
Also layered into the toolkit were text-focused toolks to develop Lower Thirds, Locators and Timelines in the font and typefaces designated for the series. Like the players themselves, we went for big, bold graphics accentuated with player silhouettes and football playbook symbolism.
Congratulations to our partners at SMAC and Prime Video – tune in to watch all three episodes on Prime Video and learn more about the rich history of one of the most famous positions in sports: Quarterback.
