Imagine Documentaries, Disney+
After the smash success of the first installment, Disney, Lucasfilm, and Imagine Documentaries linked up again to continue telling the story of Industrial Light & Magic, the company behind all visual effects for Star Wars and other legendary films.
The second season of ‘Light & Magic’ picks up where the first left off, but the new episodes no longer follow a chronological order. Working with Star Wars legend director, Joe Johnston, BGSTR was brought in to design the three new episodes and refresh the design approach that characterized the first season to reflect this nonlinear storytelling.
For this design lift, we still were handling a lot of archival imagery from films like Star Wars, in addition to other ILM films like Twister and Pirates of the Caribbean. We maintained a similar style to the first season when it comes to incorporating motion into the archival stills - focusing on preserving the integrity of the art while adding visual interest.
The documentary interviews in season two bring a strong perspective from the ILM creatives via green screen. We comped these interviews for the film and framed the personalities to be both separate from and intertwined with the scene they’re referencing on screen.
Whether dealing with archival imagery, comping vintage graphics or animating still logos and frames, we were able to build on the groundwork of the first season and inject the same high-energy and fun vibes shared by the ILM staff and crew as part of their history.
Getting to touch the archival imagery for iconic films like Star Wars and War of the Worlds is always special but graphically telling the story of how these films achieved their most iconic visual moments really reminds us why we’re in this industry.
Congratulations to our partners on a great new season—stream the three new episodes now on Disney+
