a story of survival

You’ve heard the story—four siblings, stranded in the Colombian rainforest for forty days, the eldest aged 13 and the youngest only 11 months. How did they survive? What did they see? Their incredible tale of survival is recounted in ‘Lost in the Jungle’, the latest documentary from Little Monster Films and National Geographic.
BGSTR was honored to design the film, partnering with filmmakers Chai Versahelyi, Jimmy Chin and Juan Camilo Cruz to craft graphics that infuse the film with the raw power of the human spirit. For our initial design exploration, we focused on finding a graphic language for the mysteries the children experienced in the jungle. The jungle spirits and duende were rendered with several styles of illustration before landing on the overlay style that is seen throughout the final film.
The maps we designed are important pieces of storytelling as they reference the combined search efforts of the Colombian special forces and the indigenous trackers on their quest to find the lost children. We explored different ways of depicting the jungle— photo real, illustrative and various combination versions to get the right blend of authentic jungle feel and the mysticism referenced throughout the film and the search of the siblings.
‘Lost in the Jungle’ can’t really explain how the children survived, and our design underscores the storytelling by uniquely depicting the maps and jungle imagery in a realistic tone and allowing the mysteries of the jungle to be depicted in a more ambiguous and dreamy way.
Thank you to our partners at Little Monster and National Geographic for letting us help you tell this beautiful story with a miraculously happy ending. Watch the film on Disney+.
